If your baby is less than one months old and has a fever over 100.4 he should be evaluated immediately. This may be a sign of serious illness. Call the office right away so we can see your baby. If it is after hours go to the emergency room.
The most accurate way to take your baby’s temperature is rectally.
The rectal temperature is the most accurate and preferred way to measure your baby’s temperature when they are less than three months old.
It is no longer considered safe to use a mercury thermometer. To take a rectal temp insert the tip of a digital rectal thermometer lubricated with K-Y or petroleum jelly approximately ½ inch into the rectum and wait for the reading.
