Well Child – Preventive Wellness
Well Child visits are an important part of your child’s health. Routine well child visits help your health care providers get to know your child. The more regularly we see your children, the better we are able to evaluate your child’s development, behavior and general well-being. When a child is well, we have the ability to focus on the whole child, not just acute illnesses. We encourage parent/s who spend the most time with the child to attend well child visits. Although all children develop at their own schedule; delays or drastic changes in development can be a trigger for uncovering bigger issues. Often catching a problem early in development can lead to little or no long term impact on the child’s life. Prior to each well child visit we ask that you visit our Patient Portal to complete a developmental survey. Completing the survey prior to the visit allows you to have time to reflect on your child’s development without being rushed. It allows us to gain a good understanding of what is going on with your child prior to the visit so that we may structure the appointment accordingly. This allows us to really focus on issues that are concerning to the doctor or the parent. We will ask questions about their daily habits such as diet, playing, sleep, learning, social behaviors and safety issues. These questions help us partner with you to address many children’s needs such as optimal nutrition, guidance for toilet training, or learning about safety issues such as car seat use or lead paint exposure.
Newborn Hospital Visits
Etowah Pediatric doctors look forward to meeting your newborn baby at the hospital, if you delivery locally. If you deliver outside of the county you will most likely see the Pediatrician on call at that hospital and they will report to us the details of your delivery and baby’s health status. (Please see the newborn section if you have any questions about getting started with us). During these hospital visits, the doctor will ensure your newborn baby is healthy by performing several physical examinations, reviewing labs, monitoring the baby’s weight and jaundice level, among other things. The pediatrician will visit you and the baby on average 2 or 3 times before you go home. You will also be given instructions as to when to follow up with us and bring baby in for the first new born visit in our office. We can’t wait to get to know your baby and be a part of your child’s life.
Caring for sick kids can be overwhelming; but dealing with coughs, fevers, ear aches and other illnesses are a part of growing up. We want to help you and your family by partnering with you to treat and cope with illness, as well help guide you with prevention of acute and chronic illnesses. Through regular well child visits, it is important for us to maintain a strong relationship with you and your child so that we can address more complex medical issues should they arise. Chronic disease, developmental delays and behavioral problems often offer no easy solutions so it is important to have a medical home with Pediatric providers whom you and your children trust to tackle these situation. We very much want to be your care providers in all of these times.
The Online Patient Portal
We feel the Patient Portal is one of the best tools that we have to serve our patient’s needs. The portal is not just a storage for medical records. Although you do have access to all of your children’s medical records by logging onto your family’s patient portal it is so much more. By logging into the portal you can send the nurse a question, request an appointment, pay your bill, see your baby’s growth chart, review the notes from a visit about a specific issue discussed with the doctor as well as many other useful tools. We ask that you log into the Patient Portal prior to each well child visit and complete a developmental survey. By completing the survey prior to your visit, you have time to reflect on your child’s development without being rushed and gives us information about how to structure your appointment so that we focus on what is important to you, your child and the doctor.
You have access to information discussed in your well child visits by logging into the portal. You can access information about specific immunizations your child received, growth chart data, information specific to your child’s developmental milestones as well as notes of any specific issues discussed with your provider by logging into the Patient Portal.
As part of our commitment to provide the best pediatric care, we offer a wide range of additional tests. These tests, available to all patients, are part of our comprehensive pediatric care. They include:
- Vision Screens – a painless, safe, non-invasive optometry test that checks the visual acuity of your child. This is an effective first screening to determine if more in depth evaluation may be needed.
- Hearing Screens or otoacoustic emissions test – test that measures sound waves produced in the inner ear. A tiny probe is placed just inside the ear canal, which then measures the response when clicks or tones are played into a child’s ear.
- Lab work – To provide timely feedback to our patients we offer many in-house lab solutions such as urine testing, blood testing and cultures. For more extensive lab work we have partnered with several area laboratories so that we can get high quality lab work in a timely manner for our patient’s more specific needs.
